Helston’s a market town found to the north of Cornwall’s Lizard Peninsula, which runs down to the region’s tip. Holiday parks near Helston put some of the county’s – and world’s – best beaches on your doorstep. You’ve got a solid choice of three standout stretches all under 15 minutes’ drive away. There’s Loe Bar and Porthleven – the latter lines up a busy harbour and estuary packed with pubs and cafés. And you’ve also got Praa Sands, which flaunts almost-white sands.
Award-winning Kynance Cove is only half an hour’s drive, too. You’ve probably seen it plastered all over social media – it’s been voted one of the World’s 50 Best Beaches. Away from the coast, Helston still serves up water in the form of a beautiful boating lake. And time your visit to Helston with early May to witness the annual Flora Day celebrations. The whole place comes together to mark the end of winter with dances through the town.

It’s not in Helston, but St Michael’s Mount is one not to miss. Just under 25 minutes’ drive will land you at Marazion Beach. At low tide, you can walk across to the mount – or island – to check out its castle and grounds. A boat service runs at high tide, too.
A 10 minutes’ drive from Helston, this sanctuary is the perfect place to meet marine life. They rescue and rehabilitate seal pups from the Cornish coastline. But the sanctuary’s also a permanent home to animals that need special care, from penguins to otters.
